The Story of Her Accession

king george and princess elizabeth

Being the longest-reigning British monarch, HM Queen Elizabeth is beloved and respected not just in the UK but around the globe. On her 21st birthday, she declared that she would dedicate her whole life, whether long or short, to the service of the people, and she has strived to live up to these words ever since.

When King George VI’s health started to decline, Elizabeth frequently took his place in public events. She also took his place in the proposed Commonwealth tour of Australia and New Zealand through Kenya in early 1952. Unfortunately, during this tour, Elizabeth heard the news of her father’s death, and she was now a young 25-year-old girl who had suddenly become the Queen. Elizabeth then returned to the UK to assume her duties as the new Queen. She chose to retain her name Elizabeth as her regnal name, which allowed her to become Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom.

Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Exhibitions

To celebrate the service of Queen Elizabeth for the past 70 years, Windsor Castle, Buckingham Palace and the Palace of Holyroodhouse in Edinburgh are holding special exhibits that tell the story of her journey as a Queen.
