My visit to the British Museum was absolutely excellent! Entry was perfectly organized and right on schedule, which made the whole experience smooth and stress-free. The museum itself is stunning, with incredible exhibits and a rich collection that kept me fascinated throughout my visit. I highly recommend the British Museum to anyone interested in history and culture. It’s definitely worth a visit!

I bought the skip-the-line ticket and it worked perfectly! We met with a representative near the museum who let us in through a side entrance. The ticket gives you access to an app where you can find explanations of the artworks — it would be better to have earphones. Great option to avoid the long entrance queue!

Visiting the British Museum with my family was a wonderful experience, made even better by the priority entrance and audio tour. Skipping the main queue saved us time and kept the kids engaged from the start. The audio guide was clear, informative, and easy for all ages to follow, helping us navigate the vast collection without feeling overwhelmed. A perfect mix of education and fun highly recommended for families exploring London together.

Had an amazing visit to the British Museum! The Japanese gallery was a real standout — the samurai armor and woodblock prints were so detailed and beautiful. I wasn’t expecting to enjoy it as much as I did! After wandering around for a couple hours, I grabbed a bite at the café — the food was surprisingly good (the scones are a must!). Also popped into the gift shop and ended up buying way more than I planned — lots of fun, unique stuff. Definitely planning to go back soon!

We didn't realize that there would be a long wait to go through security so we were late and our guide was patient about that. The other couple was late as well. Maybe let attendees know ahead of time that the security line can be slow and to show up 20 minutes early. Our guide was pleasant enough but appeared unprepared for the tour. She had difficulty coming up with fairly simple English words and didn't seen as familiar with the museum as one would expect. If your customers prefer the guide speak in english, maybe you should hire a native speaker.

But they sold me tickets for 15.30 and the museum asked us to leave at 16.50.... so we could not go through even half of the enclosure....even at a rush.... The food quality was not as expected, and service wasn't great. It took over 15 minutes for a server to come to the table after I was seated, then it was another 10 minutes before I received even table water. Larger tables who arrived and ordered after me received their items first, and they refused to bring more hot water for my teapot when I asked. Dessert items were overly sweet, and the sandwiches were dry. The scones were good.

Not as described- you are literally in the middle of the cafe surrounds by people ordering smelly fish dishes. I was very disappointed We left early because of the nasty smell.

Nice sandwiches, scones and mini cakes. Much as expected. Only one cup of tea/coffee included. It was very warm in the restaurant and we ended up getting additional 1xcoffee, 1xtea and 2xspakling water for a total of £20-something. The best of it all was us skipping the hour long museum entry- que, as the afternoon tea vouchers gave access to a fast track Line. I didnt know tjat - maybe i didnot read the fine print. But that was Great! Maybe on a rainy day the venue is better.

The food portion is big, especially the scones. I see other tables take away . The restaurant should remind people that it is a shareable portion for some customers . It's quite awkward that you bring take away boxes when visiting the museum.

I bought the skip-the-line ticket and it worked perfectly! We met with a representative near the museum who let us in through a side entrance. The ticket gives you access to an app where you can find explanations of the artworks — it would be better to have earphones. Great option to avoid the long entrance queue!

As the Tower and Tower Bridge are close together, a morning and afternoon combination of the two sights is a good idea. We had planned 2 hours for the Tower with two children (aged 7 and 10), which was adequate. We spent the whole afternoon at the Tower. Especially in Tower Bridge, the tour through the museum and the engine room is very entertaining for the children with an accompanying activity.

Visiting the British Museum with my family was a wonderful experience, made even better by the priority entrance and audio tour. Skipping the main queue saved us time and kept the kids engaged from the start. The tickets were easy to purchase, we chose a dual ticket option with a reduction for seniors. At both places, the staff was very flexible allowing us to enter early. 2 to 3 hours in the Tower is required as there is so much to see. The audio guide is very worthwhile, Beefeater guide attracts large number. Our trip to Tower Bridge was fascinating, worth visiting the engine room, very interesting.

What's inside the British Museum

The Great Court

At the center is the Queen Elizabeth II Great Court, a 2-acre indoor courtyard and the largest in Europe. Once a garden-turned-library, its huge glass roof floods the space with light. See African art, cross-cultural exhibitions, and temporary displays, like The Lion of Knidos and the bust of Amenhotep III.

Galleries and artworks

Walk through 60 rooms of history — explore Egyptian mummies and the Rosetta Stone, then turn a corner and come face-to-face with African artifacts at the Sainsbury Africa Galleries. See treasures from the Roman Empire or South Asia, digital galleries for Pacific Ocean artifacts, or digital prints and drawings.

Exhibitions

Reading Room

It was built in the 1800s, with 4.8 km of bookcases and 40 km of shelves, inspired by Rome’s Pantheon. Only the likes of Karl Marx, Lenin, and novelists like Bram Stoker and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, were lucky enough to be allowed in. Today, it houses the archive for students and history buffs.

british museum tickets

Library and archive

The library has over 300,000 volumes on everything from ancient cultures to current global movements. The collection is divided into sections for Africa, Asia, and Europe, and one for coins and medals. They also have a massive archive filled with the museum's own history since 1753.

british museum tickets

Study rooms

Each department, from Africa to Asia, has a research room where you can get up close and personal with the collection (with an appointment, of course). Dig into regions like Oceania, Europe, Greece, and the Middle East, or dive into topics like horology, money, medals, or prints and drawings.

Note: The British Museum has some amazing artifacts, but there's a debate about where some of them belong and how they were acquired since many of these ways are no longer acceptable. Countries continue to request the return of objects taken a long time ago, especially under conflict and colonial activity.

Visitor tips for the British Museum

  • While entry to the British Museum is free, it is recommended that you pre-book your tickets to skip the long ticketing queues.
  • Pick up a map of the British Museum from the Great Court or download the British Museum app before your visit. This will allow you to visit only the parts that you are interested in and save time.
  • The queues at the toilets tend to be very long so try to use the facilities elsewhere before you enter the museum.
  • If it's your first visit, head straight to the Rosetta Stone (Room 4), the Elgin Marbles (Room 18), and the Egyptian mummies (Room 62) early in your visit when energy levels are high. These are the most crowded areas later in the day. Rooms like the Islamic World (Room 42) or Africa (Room 25) are less crowded and offer rich insights into global history. They're a refreshing break from the busier exhibits.
  • Midweek afternoons are generally quieter. Avoid weekends and school holidays when families and tourists dominate the space. The museum stays open late on Fridays, and the atmosphere is more relaxed. It's a great time to explore without the usual bustle.
  • The museum’s main entrance on Great Russell Street gets packed. Instead, use the Montague Place entrance, which is often less busy. Also, skip the crowded central lifts by using the staircases near the ends of the building.
  • Do not skip the temporary exhibits. Some of the most engaging displays are part of rotating exhibitions that are less crowded but packed with treasures you might not see again!
  • Knowledgeable museum volunteers are stationed throughout the building and love sharing lesser-known stories about the artifacts. They can point out details you might otherwise miss.
  • Visit The British Museum and pair it with a London City Card for a full day of history.
