About the London Eye pod
The London Eye pods are the 32 sealed, air-conditioned passenger compartments affixed to the outer rim of the iconic London Eye, also known as the Millennium Wheel.
Crafted by Poma, these oval capsules, numbered 1 to 33 (excluding 13 due to superstition), each symbolize a London borough and can host up to 25 individuals.
The gradual rotation of the wheel, at 26 cm per second, completes a full revolution in approximately 30 minutes, allowing continuous passenger boarding. To facilitate the entry and exit of disabled or elderly individuals, the London Eye may momentarily pause.
Notably, a 2009 upgrade involved transporting each capsule down the river to Essex. In 2013, a special capsule, the Coronation Capsule, was introduced to commemorate the 60th anniversary of Queen Elizabeth's coronation.
