The blockbuster musical opened in the West End at the Prince Edward Theatre in 1999. After a couple of years, the musical was transferred to the Prince of Wales Theatre in 2004. In 2012, Mamma Mia reopened at the Novello Theatre, where it celebrated its 20th West End birthday in 2019. The Story

About Theatre

Opening in 1905 as the Waldorf, Novello Theatre was built as a pair with the Aldwych Theatre and features design by W. G. R. Sprague. At present, the theatre is managed by the Shubert Organization. In 2005, Sir Cameron Mackintosh purchased the theatre from Delfont Mackintosh Theatres and renamed it the Novello Theatre in honour of Ivor Novello, the owner of a flat above the theatre. In its century-long existence, the Novello Theatre has been refurbished 3 times; once in 1930, then in the early 1970s, and most recently in 2005. The last refurbishment was done by Cameron Mackintosh’s company for the theatre’s 100th anniversary.
