Things to know before booking Professor Dumbledore’s office tickets

  • Included access: Entry to the office is part of the general tour; you do not need a specialised pass.
  • Timed entry: Because the Studio Tour operates on a strict timed-entry basis, ensure you arrive at the attraction at least 20 minutes before your scheduled slot to reach the set at a relaxed pace.

Professor Dumbledore’s office in a nutshell

Guide presenting Dumbledore's office at Harry Potter Warner Bros Studio Tour.

A masterclass in set design, this office was one of the most expensive and detailed sets created for the franchise. It served as the narrative heart for Harry’s mentorship and the discovery of Voldemort’s past.

  • Must-see highlights: The hand-labelled memory cabinet, the intricate Pensieve, and the animatronic Fawkes the Phoenix.
  • Unique fact: The hundreds of "ancient" books lining the shelves are actually leather-bound British phonebooks, aged by the prop department to look like centuries-old wizarding texts.

The moving stone staircase & gargoyle

Guarding the entrance is the massive stone gargoyle. In the films, this rotated to reveal a spiral staircase; on the tour, it stands as a testament to the "password-protected" secrecy of the office.

The triple-level circular rooms

The set is built as three overlapping circular chambers. This design allowed cameras to move 360 degrees, capturing the cluttered, scholarly atmosphere from every possible angle.

The Memory Cabinet

Located near the desk, this tall, backlit cabinet houses nearly 900 tiny glass vials. Each one was individually labelled by the graphics team (MinaLima) with names like Argus Filch or Bertha Jorkins.

The pensieve

This shallow stone basin, carved with runes, is where Dumbledore and Harry "dived" into memories. Look closely at the basin to see the incredible stonework detail created by the prop team.

Portraits of headmasters

High on the walls hang 48 portraits of former Hogwarts leaders. These were hand-painted and "distressed" with layers of varnish to mimic centuries of grime and ageing.

Glass-fronted bookcases and magical artefacts

Lining the room are towering bookcases filled with weathered tomes and mysterious objects. Many items were handmade, from swirling orbs to intricate silver devices, reflecting Dumbledore’s deep intellect.

The Sorting Hat and Sword of Gryffindor

The Sorting Hat sits high on a shelf, while the Sword of Gryffindor rests below. Both reflect Dumbledore’s authority and his pivotal role in the most important decisions of the Wizarding World.

Fawkes the Phoenix

Perched on a golden stand beside the desk, the model used during filming is on display. It showcases the lifelike craftsmanship behind magical creatures and highlights the phoenix's symbolic ties to loyalty and rebirth.

Magical instruments and desk details

Dumbledore’s desk is covered in ornate instruments, parchment, and delicate trinkets. Some props feature practical effects that move or light up, bringing the headmaster’s workspace vividly to life.

The filmmaking magic behind Professor Dumbledore’s office

  • Set redressing: The office was built with removable walls and redressed for various scenes, allowing flexible filming and even transforming it into other Hogwarts interiors when needed.
  • Painted portraits: Forty-eight portraits were created from actor photographs, then aged with layered paintwork to mimic the centuries-old magical paintings seen on the office walls.
  • Bookcase illusion: Hundreds of shelf books are actually leather-wrapped British phonebooks, chosen to reduce cost and weight while creating the appearance of ancient magical texts.
  • Pensieve effects: The Pensieve’s swirling liquid was created using a greenscreen inside the basin, later replaced with CGI to mimic the reflective, silvery memory surface.
  • Celestial details: Astronomy-inspired props like telescopes and orbs were added to reflect Dumbledore’s fascination with the universe, enriching the visual storytelling and set design.
  • Robe continuity: Displayed costumes were tailored to match each film, with distinct robe styles for Richard Harris and Michael Gambon to show Dumbledore’s character evolution.
  • Functional props: Many magical instruments on Dumbledore’s desk featured practical effects, including smoke or motorised parts, to produce real-time movement during filming.

Architectural highlights

  • Gothic verticality: Production Designer Stuart Craig designed the office to feel "soaring." The high ceilings and mezzanine levels suggest a space that stretches into the very spires of Hogwarts.
  • The "Wild Wall" construction: The set was built with removable sections. This allowed the production crew to slide out a wall, place a camera where the wall used to be, and film wide shots that would otherwise be impossible in a small room.

Historical and cultural significance

As the inner sanctum of the Wizarding World’s greatest wizard, this office represents the bridge between Hogwarts’ ancient past and its uncertain future. It is culturally significant as the site of the series's most pivotal revelations, from the discovery of the Chamber of Secrets to the tragic truth of Snape’s loyalty. It remains a symbol of wisdom, sanctuary, and the heavy burden of leadership.

Moments from the films recreated here

Harry’s first visit

In Chamber of Secrets, Harry first enters Dumbledore’s office, where he meets Fawkes and speaks with the Sorting Hat. This early scene sets the tone for Dumbledore’s future role as a guide and protector.

Dumbledore’s arrest

One of the most powerful moments in Order of the Phoenix takes place here, as Dumbledore boldly takes the blame for Dumbledore’s Army and vanishes in phoenix fire before the stunned eyes of Fudge and Umbridge.

Pensieve memories

In Goblet of Fire, Harry peers into the Pensieve and witnesses a tense courtroom memory featuring Barty Crouch Jr. The swirling visuals and lighting effects help recreate the magical experience of entering someone else’s memory.

Horcrux revelations

Half-Blood Prince features key conversations in the office where Dumbledore discusses Horcruxes and Voldemort’s past with Harry. The Pensieve returns as a tool for uncovering Tom Riddle’s journey and planning the next steps.

Snape’s memories

In Deathly Hallows: Part 2, Harry uses the Pensieve in the office to explore Snape’s memories. This emotional moment reveals Snape’s hidden loyalty and love for Lily, reshaping everything Harry thought he understood.

Harry’s recognition

Although the army trains elsewhere, Order of the Phoenix shows Dumbledore privately acknowledging Harry’s bravery in his office. These quiet scenes reinforce the trust and mutual respect between student and headmaster during difficult times.

Get directions

  • The area around the gargoyle entrance is a bottleneck for photos. Try to visit this section during the quiet periods: either first thing in the morning or later in the evening. Don't forget to look up—some of the best details are on the higher shelves!
  • When entering, take a brief pause to absorb the height and layout of the set. It’s one of the few vertical Hogwarts interiors on display.
  • Although VFX created the swirling liquid, the Pensieve basin itself is finely detailed. Check out the carved runes and shimmering surface up close.
  • Ask the staff about how “wild walls” allowed for dramatic camera angles and magical entrances. The set was often reconfigured across different films.
  • When taking photos, step slightly off-centre to avoid glare from lighting or glass. It’ll help capture sharper, clearer shots of what’s inside the set.
  • Rewatch key scenes set in Dumbledore’s office before your visit. It’ll help you appreciate how closely the real set matches moments from the films.
  • Some areas may look accessible, but are protected for preservation. Respecting the boundaries helps maintain the set’s condition for future visitors.
  • The staircase entrance is a popular photo spot. Step aside quickly after your turn so others can view and photograph it without feeling rushed.
